Jesus Gives us the Spirit

John 14:16-17, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

We can’t live the life of following Jesus on our own. The only way to live the Christian life is by the power of the Helper, the Holy Spirit.

We need the Holy Spirit to help us grow as a disciple: Someone who is learning to worship Jesus, to be changed by Jesus, to obey Jesus commands, and to proclaim Jesus with other disciples.

We can’t do that by ourselves. And Jesus knows that. So the Father and the Son send the Holy Spirit to empower believers with the resurrection power of Jesus.

In prayer, we acknowledge our dependency on God as we come into the presence of the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Spirit.

Just the act of prayer is itself a witness to our need for the power of the Holy Spirit.
